Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are there really different kinds of acupuncture?
A: Yes! Classical Five Element Acupuncture is a holistic method of acupuncture that alleviates symptoms by targeting an underlying energetic imbalance. Simply put, it supports the whole person so not only can it help physical symptoms but can bring about a greater sense of personal well-being also.

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Classical Five Element Acupuncture differs from other forms of acupuncture in that the needles are not usually left in the body. Typically the practitioner will insert the needle, briefly stimulate the acupuncture point and remove the needle in one fluid movement. This will cause a variety of sensations ranging from a low, tugging feeling to a sharp, electrical one. Generally, if the needle is inserted but the acupuncture point is not stimulated, little or no sensation is experienced.

Q: Is it safe?
A: All acupuncture treatments are given using pre-sterilized, disposable needles. Needles are used once and then disposed of.

Q: What are the needles like?
A: The needles are about an inch long and roughly the diameter of a human hair. They are nothing like hypodermic or sewing needles, being much more slender and solid instead of hollow.

Q: How many times will I need to come see you?
A: The frequency of treatments needed vary greatly depending on many factors including the severity of the disease and its history. Generally, in the beginning, treatments are scheduled weekly but the effect of the treatment may not last quite that long. Once the effects of a treatment lasts throughout a week the treatments are spaced to 10 days or two weeks. Although the length of time it takes to “graduate” from weekly treatments varies between individuals, sometime between 5 to 10 weeks is not unusual. Eventually, with improvements seen by the patient, treatments are spaced out enough that the patient decides to continue maintenance treatments on a monthly, seasonal, or occasional basis.

Q: What happens at the initial Assessment Interview?
A: The first time a new patient is seen I conduct an extensive 1 1/2 to 2 hour interview. Because this is a holistic system of medicine it is important that I know as much as possible about the individual coming for treatment. At the initial Assessment Interview I ask questions about the individual’s life history, medical history and organ systems (diet, digestion, sleep, daily habits, etc.). A short physical exam is also performed. It is important that the patient not wear heavy makeup or scented deodorants, perfumes or body products to this interview.

Q: Do I need to “believe” in acupuncture for it to work?
A: Not at all. Like regular, allopathic medicine, faith has little to do with the results obtained with acupuncture.

Q: Is there anything I should avoid doing after a treatment?
A: A good rule of thumb is to stick to your daily routine and avoid doing anything new or unusual. It is also not a good idea to take a hot bath or have other bodywork done the evening after a treatment. The next day is fine for baths, massages, chiropractic appointments, etc.

Q: What was your training like?
A: I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies with a minor in Psychology from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. My acupuncture training was undertaken at the Institute of Taoist Education and Acupuncture in Louisville, Colorado. This training is considered a Master’s Equivalency and is a four year program, including over a year of supervised treatments in a clinical setting.

Q: What are your office hours?

A: My hours of availability are very broad, but I am available by appointment only.
